Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1: Power and Responsibility

Ultimate Spider-Man, Vol. 1: Power and Responsibility - Brian Michael Bendis This is a really good retelling of the Spider-Man mythos, updated for modern audiences. As the story begins, Peter Parker is still in high school, and remains a high school student for a large part of the series. The artwork is updated and it shows Peter in social situations similar to those faced by modern American teens. Bendis also portrays him as a much more tortured character with financial and family problems, and most definitely girl problems. It makes the Spider-Man character probably the most relatable of all superheroes.
